Yes it is. CDA is what audio cd's use and from what I've read are lossless.
Tell, the way I got around this was to rip a cd to my HD then I could convert to wav and what other format and manipulate order of tracks etc. Copying from CD to HD didn't work the same with the cda format.

Thanks, Lum & JOTS; this indicates to me that indeed, in my moronic techno limited world, "CDA" is a label attached to all such files "put" on a CD by Nero (or others for that matter). IE, no "real" conversion in the sense of resampling the original file occurs (or if it does, it is at 44.1 kHz, which ain't too shabby, at least according to the software descriptor).
Nonetheless, I had naively assumed that WAVs was WAVs and my CDs I've been generating with Nero were "true" to that format...
Do other software programs burn CDs in which the files as shown/in reality on the CD are in fact, nothing but "real" WAV files? Is that what you were getting at Lum?

Most non PC players will not play straight wav files. CDA is the standard that all cd players use, I *think* that some converting may still occur when you burn wav to Audio CD. If you look at an actual CDA file it is very very small. Think of a cda as the space between the songs on a record album. It just shows the player where to drop the needle to start the songs. All Burners will convert wav to cda but nero really likes to do it. There is a way to turn that option off but I dont have that info handy.
Try the putting the wavs in a folder and burn the whole folder. Then when you insert the cd it will show the folder, click it to open and the wavs should be intact.
We are just hiding the wavs from nero so it wont try to convert them.

when I convert a flac or shn file to wav and burn using nero it displays as wav. When I burn using the sw I have to convert tape to cd it burns as cda. I supect that if you were to copy the tracks from a factory cd ( if you can ) they would be cda

Hey, so just to be clear: I do the same thing, I think:
Get my SHNs, convert to WAVs using Trader's LHelper; store as WAVs. Using Nero, burn to an "audio CD", and it indeed shows "WAVs" as the source files, logically enough...ship off CD, and person says "they show on this audio CD as CDA!" and when I put one of my own disks in burned this way, he is right...that was what got me going.
Again, as I indicated above, I think Lum is right that the Nero software, maybe all of them, "convert" (without making lossy?!) the WAVs to show as CDA though that is just to make them compatible without truly "redigitizing" them to a new lossy format...but of course, that is what I was worried about...the idea of needing to "show" burners the beginning and end of tracks and what not makes a nice explanation here...?
Make any sense?

Ok I confirmed what you're saying, they show up on my cd's the same. Here's what I think the deal is - when they're on cd as audio they're cda. Whats the problem they play fine? If the deal is they want to move them to their hard drive then what needs to happen is they need to rip it to their HD instead of copy them from CD.

Thanks, J; yep, as Arb notes, not really a problem except the person misunderstood, and really wanted the data files, which in a DVD, was easily done...but then it was the academic question that got me intrigued.

I haven't seen a burning program that does not tell you how much space you have used on the blank cd when you add songs.
If you think some conversion is going on, try this. I assume you know the file size of your wavs before hand, so add one to the burn list, and see what it tells you about remaining space. If the size of that particular file drops, then it's getting converted to something lesser in quality, but in the case of cda, that isn't happening. It's a 44.1khz/16 bit stereo wav file.
